Thomas Szacka-Marier is a filmmaker, cinematographer and activist from Montreal, Canada. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Film Production from Concordia University and in 2016, he completed the prestigious Docnomads Master’s program in documentary film directing, which takes place in Lisbon, Budapest and Brussels.
During a year spent in Senegal, he collaborated with local filmmakers and directed the 30-minute film Follow the Tide, which was screened in several festivals and broadcasted on TV5 Monde. He also directed music videos and a number of web documentaries.
As a cinematographer, Thomas has worked on 9 feature films and numerous documentary series, filmed all across the globe. Some of the credits include Yalla, Baba! by Angie Obeid, The Wire by Tiha Gudac (winner of the FIPRESCI Prize at ZagrebDox 2021) and We Will Remember Them by Annabel Verbeke, closing film at Visions du Réel in 2019.
Thomas is among the co-founders of Naanu, a collective of independent filmmakers and artists focused on transnational creative collaboration. His other passions include (but are not limited to) permaculture, meditation, sacred plant medicine, literature and impromptu skinny dippin’.
